Chasing the Sun

Danny Vega found the Mustang in a barn outside Tucson in 2016 — buried under a tarp, covered in dust, and missing its drivetrain entirely. The body was straight, the floors were solid, and the VIN decoded to something special: a real-deal 1969 Mach 1 Sports Roof in factory Grabber Orange. He wrote a check the same afternoon.

The restoration took three years. Danny wasn't in a rush. He sourced a date-correct 351 Cleveland from a swap meet in Phoenix, rebuilt it on his kitchen table (his wife has stories), and sent the block out for machine work. When it came back bored .030 over with forged internals, he knew this wasn't going to be a numbers-matching museum piece. This was going to be a driver.

The bodywork went to a local painter who spent four months laying down the Grabber Orange respray — three coats of base, four coats of clear, then wet-sanded until it looked like liquid glass. Every piece of chrome was re-plated. Every seal was replaced. The interior went back to factory Deluxe spec with one modern concession: a hidden Bluetooth module behind the stock-looking head unit.

Today, the Sunset Bandit lives for early morning canyon runs through the Superstition Mountains. Danny drives it every weekend without fail. "Cars like this weren't meant to sit in garages," he says, wiping a smudge off the fender with his sleeve. "They were meant to chase sunsets."
